Basenji

Known as the “barkless dog” the Basenji will not bark as others dogs will. He will howl or growl when unhappy and yodel when pleased. But a true bark will never be heard from this breed.

The Basenji will weigh 20-25 pounds and stand 16-17 inches in height. They will shed their coat only in the spring. This is a very high energy dog. If you live in an apartment this is not the dog for you. They were bred in Africa to be hunters, so they have a natural instinct to chase.

The Basenji loves to dig, climb and chew. If left alone he will become bored and destroy whatever is near him. He is a very intelligent dog but not very easy to train. Being bred as a hunter he is an independent thinker and used that skill to survive the wilds of Africa . With that in mind he requires a lot of patience when training him, and training this dog is a must.

Basset Hound

The number one use of Basset Hounds in the United States is for hunting rabbits. This is a natural instinct for this breed so you must watch him and never let him off the leash in an open area, you might not see in again.

He is a great family dog. If left alone he will sleep, not destroy your home! However, he is a very slobbery dog. He tends to drool a lot and make a big mess while drinking. His coat is short but he does shed a lot. Males, at maturity, will weigh between 55-75 pounds and stand 12-15 inches in height. Females will weigh 45-65 pounds and stand 11-14 inches in height when they reach maturity.

Beagle

The Beagle was originated to hunt small game, usually the rabbit, by scent alone. With that in mind, the dog has a keen sense of smell and shouldn’t be allowed of his leash in an open area.

Beagles are pack animals, which is why they would make a fantastic addition to your family. They love to play and socialize with the young and old. They are great with children, but you need to teach your kids to be careful when he is eating. The Beagle takes their food very seriously and might get angry if they were to be “played” with while eating. They will bond with your family so if left alone for long periods of time they have a tendency to howl.

When the Beagle reaches maturity they can grow in height to 10-16 inches and weigh 20-30 pounds. Females will “blow” their coat after each season and males only once a year, usually when the weather gets warmer.

Bearded Collie

This breed was developed in Scotland ; it is commonly referred to as the Beardie. They are active, bouncy and very affectionate dogs. They have very long coats, so brushing is a must. The males stand 21-22 inches in height, while the females stand 20-21 inches.

Bedlington Terrier

The Bedlington Terrier is known as the dog with the heart of a lion and the appearance of a lamb. It was originally bred in England to hunt rats or other small game.

It is an active dog, but can do well in an apartment with regular exercise. Like most dogs if boredom sets in he can become mischievous. Along with daily exercise you should make time to brush his coat for at least 5 minutes per day. It will help keep its one of a kind appearance and insure its healthy condition. The females can weigh from 18-23 pounds and stand 15-16 inches in height. The males will weigh 18-23 pounds and stand 16-17 inches in height.

Belgian Malinois

Bred in the city of Malines, Belguim, from which it derived its name; this dog was bred to be a sheepherder. It will be protective of its owner and its owner’s property; yet will not become overly aggressive.

The dog will thrive with daily exercise. Whatever activity you are doing take him along with you. The males will weigh 60-80 pounds and stand 24-26 inches. The female will weigh 40-60 pounds and stand 22-24 inches. The coat on this dog is short and straight. He will make a wonderful addition to your family.

Belgian Sheepdog

True to its name, the Belgian Sheepdog was bred to herd sheep and protect its owner’s property. They were expected to work all day and sleep all night, then get up and do it all over again. With that in mind if you live in an apartment or a house with a small yard this might not be the dog for you. They need lots of exercise and plenty of space to run.

They are very loyal dogs and can be possessive of its family. Their coat will need to be brushed a few times a week to keep it healthy and help reduce shedding. The males can stand 24-26 inches and the females stand 22-24 inches. They are very sturdy animals. During World War 1 they were used on the battlefields to pull machine guns, carry messages and as ambulance dogs.

Belgian Tervuren

This breed came about after World War II from the Malinois and the Groenendael breed. He is a very active dog and needs daily exercise. He makes a great family pet, but will choose one person in your family to become attached to.

He has a very long coat that needs weekly brushing to keep it healthy and reduce shedding. The males can be 24-26 inches tall while the females will be 22-24 inches.

Bernese Mountain Dog

Breed in Switzerland to pull cheese and milk carts, this breed is a large dog. The males can stand 25-27 ½ inches and weigh 80-120 pounds. The females stand 23-26 inches and weigh between 70-100 pounds.

If you have allergies this might not be the bred for you. They tend to shed a lot. They make great housedogs and a wonderful family pet. Exercise is moderate for the dog a daily walk is perfect.

Bichon Frise

Translated the Bichon Frise means “curly lap dog.” Bred for the French royalty this dog is playful, affectionate and gentle. They make wonderful family pets and love to be treated as part of the family.

It’s a small breed of dog, so an apartment or a house with a small backyard will be fine for him. However, exercise is still necessary, a daily walk or a game of catch will be great. The males height will be 9-12 inches and the females stand 9-11 inches. Both will weigh between 7-12 pounds.

Used mainly to track and tree raccoons this is a working type dog. He is a powerful hound with great agility thus giving him the confidence to hunt deer, mountain lion and bear. Because this is a large dog apartment life or a home with a small backyard will not do for him. He has hunting instincts and should never be let loose to run in an unsecured area. He does require daily exercise.

The males and females will stand 23-27 inches in height and weigh 50-75 pounds. They tend to shed all year long so regular brushing is a must. They can play rough at times so keep an eye on the smaller children in your home. They will howl if left alone for long periods of time and have been known to drool or slobber a lot.

In 1805 the Thrapthon Association for the Prevention of Felons first started using Bloodhounds to help locate poachers and thieves. To this day some courts will allow the Bloodhounds man trailing testimony to be used as evidence. Because of their keen sense of smell they should never be allowed to roam free. Once they get a whiff of an interesting scent you might not see them again.

It is a very gentle and shy dog, but will be very devoted to its master. This is a shorthaired dog and shedding is average. Be warned this dog does drool, a lot. The Bloodhound is a large dog so daily exercise is important. The males will be 25-27 inches in height and weigh 90-110 pounds. The female will stand 23-25 inches in height and weigh 80-100 pounds.

This is a high-energy dog. He is very intelligent, responsive and would be a great family pet. He is in the top of his field when it comes to competitive outdoor sports. They are very active so daily exercise or play is a must. If he is left indoors without something to do he will become bored and end up destroying your home.

This dog has a long hair coat. Brushing him regularly will help reduce the shedding, but he will shed. Twice a year he will shed the most, early spring and late fall. The weight of the male can be from 30-45 pounds and the female can weigh 27-42 pounds. In height the male will stand 19-22 inches, while the female will stand18-21 inches.

This dog is great with children. He is affectionate and mild mannered which will make training him very easy. He will do well in an apartment or a home with a small backyard. But be warned, this dog loves to dig. So make sure your fencing is secure.

His coat is short and wiry and needs weekly brushing. Since his hair is so short shedding is not a problem. The Border Terrier is a small breed. The males stand 13-16 inches in height and weigh between 13-16 pounds. The females are 11-14 inches in height and weight 11-14 pounds.

Borzoi

Borzoi, in Russian, means swift. Originally bred to hunt these dogs became the favorite amongst Europe ’s royalty. Often being given to other royalty as gifts. They are very proud, sweet and self-aware dogs that will be extremely loyal to their family. Being that they are docile in nature they do not take well to teasing or rough playing, a close eye on small children around this dog is recommended.

They will do fine in an apartment or a house with a small yard. But exercise is needed, so daily walks or runs are necessary. However, being a “swift” dog only let him off his leash in a secure area. These dogs, if a scent has caught its nose, can be very fast.

The coat on the Borzoi is long and silky. They are seasonal shedders, and tend to shed heavily during that time. The males will stand 28 inches and the female will stand at 26 inches. Female weigh 60-90 pounds and the males weigh 75-105 pounds.

The Boston Terrier was breed from the English Bulldog and the now extinct English White Terrier. These dogs are one of the few breeds to be bred in the United States . This dog makes a great addition to ones family. He is very intelligent and good with children and the elderly. They are great for apartment living and will do well without a yard. Regular walks and some free time play will keep this dog in shape.

They have a shorthair coat and are an average shedder. The males and females are 15-17 inches in height and both will weigh between 10-25 pounds.

This is a true farm dog. He was used on a farm to pull the cart, herd the cattle and be the farmer’s helper. He was also an ambulance and messenger dog. But in today’s times you’ll find him being used as a dog for the blind or a tracking dog. He makes a great family pet. He will be your friend, guardian and protector all in one.

He has a rough coat that requires regular brushing. Daily exercise is a must; a run with its master and some free time play is a good idea. The males and females will stand 25-27 inches and weigh 90-120 pounds.

The name Boxer came about because of the way he likes to use his front paws for just about everything. They are very playful, but it’s in his nature to protect his family and home. They make excellent watchdogs and have been known to restrain an intruder. They will do well in an apartment as long as he is exercised daily. A large yard for him to run in is ideal.

The Boxer has a shorthair coat and is an average shedder. They tend to be very clean and will groom themselves. The height for the males will be from 22-25 inches and the females will be from 21-24 inches. Males will weigh 60-70 pounds and the females will weigh 53-65 pounds.

The Briard is a herding dog. They have wonderful hearing, which makes them a great watchdog. They need a lot of activity and attention. A simple pat on the head will not due for this dog. This breed, if raised with children, will do well with them. However, he does not like to be teased. They have been known to become aggressive.

His coat is long and course, similar to a goats. Brushing his coat a couple times a week will help reduce the shedding. He is a large dog that needs lots of exercise. He will do well in an apartment or a home with a small yard, as long as a daily run and free time play are given. He loves to swim and run alongside you as you bike or jog.

The males are 24-27 inches in height and the females’ are22-25 inches, both will weigh around 75 pounds.

 

Brittany Spaniel

This dog is very intelligent and can be easily trained for hunting. He is very gentle, loving and obedient. But very active, it will not due well in an apartment. He needs lots of room to run and play.

It is a low maintenance dog that sheds lightly. The males will be 17-21 inches in height and weigh35-40 pounds. The females will stand 18-20 inches and weigh 30-40 pounds.

These are affectionate and charming dogs. They make great family pets, as long as their owners spoil them. They are great for apartments or homes with a small yard. Little exercise is needed from its master; they get enough exercise just running around their home through out the day.

They can have either two types of coats. One is coat is dense and wiry, while the other can be smooth, glossy and straight. Both coats are shorthaired and should be brushed regularly. They are considered to be light shedders. Both sexes will stand 7-8 inches and weigh 6-12 pounds.

The Bull Terriers are gentle, loving active and will make a great family pet. They are very loyal and will do well in a home that will give him lots of companionship. They will not do well in a home where left for long periods of time by themselves, they can become destructive.

Being an active dog, daily exercise is a must. Otherwise they will become over weight and unhealthy. He has a short coat the needs occasional brushing. The Standard Bull Terrier stands at 21-22 inches and weighs from 45-60 pounds. The Miniature Bull Terrier stands 12-14 inches and weighs 24-33 pounds.

This breed might look threatening, but in fact can be a very gentle dog. He will fight off an intruder but will also be affectionate with its family. They have a tendency to drool and slobber and snore very loudly. This breed is an indoor dog and would rather take a nap then do any form of exercise. But a daily walk is a good idea.

They have a shorthair coat and need only weekly brushing. You should wipe its wrinkles on its faced to remove any dirt. The males and females will stand 12-16 inches in height. The males will weigh 53-55 pounds and the females will weigh 49-51 pounds.

Bullmastiff

The Bullmastiff is a strong and alert guard dog. He can be fearless and protective, yet docile and affectionate. They can knock down an intruder but be gentle with children. They do tend to drool and slobber.

He tends to be lazy which will lead to weight gain. Exercise him daily and he will do just fine. They have short hair and tend to shed very little. The males can get to be big, standing at 25-27 inches and weighing 110-133 pounds. The females stand 24-26 inches and weigh 100-120 pounds.
