This breed was mostly used as a “working dog.” They have been used in the police force, farms, guard dogs and a guide for the blind. They are loving, loyal, intelligent, and eager and make great family dogs. They are gentle with kids yet very protective of their family and home.

They will do fine in an apartment, but a home with a large yard is ideal. They should have a lot of activity during the day. They excel at activities that challenge them. Their coat will shed regularly and should be brushed daily to help reduce it from around your home. Baths should be given only once or twice a year to help keep his skin oils from depleting. Males will stand 24-26 inches and females will stand 22-24 inches. Both will weigh between 77-85 pounds.

The Shorthaired Pointer was bred from hunters who need a dog that could point within a reasonable distance for a man hunting. This breed can hunt in the water and on land. Not only is he a wonderful hunter, but also he makes a great family pet. They are loyal, friendly and are great with kids. They are an active dog that needs to exercise daily otherwise they will become bored and destructive. Lots of running and playtime is required. An apartment is not for this dog. A home with a large yard and high fence, he tends to jump out and escape, is ideal for him.

He has a smooth coat that needs to be brushed regularly. Males will be 23-25 inches and weigh between 55-70 pounds. Females will be 21-23 inches and weigh between 45-60 pounds.

This is an extremely active breed and unless you can provide him with rigorous daily exercise this is not the dog you want. He needs to run and have room to play; an apartment is not for this dog. If left indoors too long he will become restless. A home with a large yard is best for him. He loves to jog and swim and makes a great companion for both activities. He is loyal and protective to his family.

Both sexes will weigh between 60-70 pounds. The males will stand 24-26 inches and the females will stand 22-24 inches. Their coat is short and should be brushed at least twice a week. They are average shedders.

Intelligent, loyal, good-natured and devoted is how to describe this dog. He is great with children and is easy to train. He loves to play and will can never have enough exercise. They will do okay in an apartment, but are better suited in a home that has a large yard.

The females will stand 23-26 inches and weigh between 55-75 pounds. The males will be 26-28 inches and weigh 60-80 pounds. Its coat is wiry and the undercoat can become matted if not brushed once a week.

This is the world’s number 1 family companion dog. Used for a guide dog, narcotics detection, service dog for the disabled and a therapy dog. Loving, gentle and good with children, patient and obedient, these are just some of the reason why he is a great family dog

Their smooth haired coat is easy to groom, brushing on occasion is all that is needed. Bathe only when needed. Males weigh 60-80 pounds and stand 22-24 inches. Females will weigh 55-70 pounds and stand 20-22 inches. Being a retriever, a game of fetch is great exercise for him. As long as they are exercised daily they will well in an apartment or a home with a small yard.

This Setter needs daily exercise, without it they will become difficult to manage and restless. They are not recommended for an apartment. They should have a large yard to run in. Daily walks should be taken. They are obedient, loyal, gentle and good with children.

Their coat is medium in length and just needs regular brushing. Males will stand 24-27 inches and weigh between 55-80 pounds. Females stand 23-26 inches and weigh 45-70 pounds.

The Great Dane, known as the “Apollo of all dogs,” is a very large dog. Males will stand 30-34 inches and weigh 120-200 pounds. Females will stand 28-32 inches and weigh 100-130 pounds. Although, some Danes might get larger than that. He is gentle, but being so large might knock down a small child.

He will need lots of exercise and at least one walk a day. A large yard is recommended but they will do okay in an apartment as long as they are taken out daily. Giving him a bath isn’t easy, to avoid doing so brush his short hair weekly.

In its native home of France , this dog was used as a guard dog for sheep and châteaux’s. He was also used as a sled dog and avalanche rescue dog. They make great a family companion who will be devoted to them. They are gentle with children. The Pyrenees tend to drool and slobber.

They need regular exercise to keep them in shape. A large sized yard is optimal for him; he wouldn’t do well in an apartment. To keep its long double coat in good condition, regular brushing is recommended. They are heavy shedders once a year. Some Pyrenees can get to 40 inches in height, but the average height for a male is 27-32 inches and for females it will be 25-29 inches. Weight for the males will be around 100 pounds and the females will weigh around 85 pounds.

His nickname, “the poor man’s horse”, was given to him because of his natural drafting ability. He almost became extinct due to the popularity of the St. Bernard. In 1967 the GSMD was brought to the United States . He is a rare breed and might be difficult to find. They are watchful, loyal, and protective and love to please. The breed is very large so you should be careful if there are small children in the home.

Although this is a big dog he will do fine in an apartment or a small yard as long as he is taken out regularly for a walk. They have a short coat that needs occasional brushing. Both sexes will be between 23.5-28.5 inches in height and weigh between 130-135 pounds.

This is the fastest dog in the world. They can reach speeds up to 40 mph. Many centuries ago they were used to chase and bring down wild boar deer. Today you will find them at dog races chasing a mechanical rabbit. After they retire from the sport many are destroyed. Rescues clubs try to save the gentler, even-tempered dogs.

They need regular exercise, a jog or walk will do. A small yard or apartment will be okay with daily exercise. The coat is short and requires weekly brushing. Males will be 28-30 inches and the females will be 27-28 inches. Males weigh 65-70 pounds and the females weigh 60-65 pounds.
