Maltese

The Maltese is a gentle, loving, playful little dog. They can learn tricks easily but might be difficult to housebreak. The Maltese will make a great companion and family pet. They have been known to snap at inconsiderate children.

They are very active indoors and will do great in an apartment. Daily exercise can be as simple as indoor play or a walk. The height for the males will be 8-10 inches and 8-9 for the females. They will both weigh between 6 ½ -9 pounds. The long coat should be brushed daily. They shed little to no hair, which makes them a good dog for someone who has allergies.

Manchester Terrier

Developed in the 19th century in Manchester , England this terrier was given the nickname “rat terrier” because it was bred to be a rat hunter. The terrier looks a lot like the Miniature Doberman although the breeds are not related. They are loyal and very intelligent. They can be snappish so small children need to be watched around this dog.

Exercise should be daily, a walk or run is ideal. They will do well in an apartment or without a yard. There are two types of Manchester Terriers, the Toy and Standard. The male and female Toy will be 10-12 inches and weigh 6-8 pounds. The Standard will be 15-16 inches for both sexes. Males will weigh 18 pounds and the females will weigh 17 pounds. Both breeds require little to no grooming.

This is one of the heaviest breeds. Males can be up to 160 pounds and females can be around 150 pounds. They were first used as fighting dogs but today’s Mastiff is gentle and docile. They are great with children but must be watched with small children due to their size. They have been known to drool, wheeze and snore loudly. The Mastiff will do fine in an apartment. They tend to be lazy so daily exercise is a must. The short coat should be brushed weekly.

The Bull Terriers are gentle, loving active and will make a great family pet. They are very loyal and will do well in a home that will give him lots of companionship. They will not do well in a home where left for long periods of time by themselves, they can become destructive.

Being an active dog, daily exercise is a must. Otherwise they will become over weight and unhealthy. He has a short coat the needs occasional brushing. The Standard Bull Terrier stands at 21-22 inches and weighs from 45-60 pounds. The Miniature Bull Terrier stands 12-14 inches and weighs 24-33 pounds.

The Miniature Pinscher might look like a Doberman Pinscher but is not related to that breed. The Miniature Pinscher is actually an older breed then the Doberman. They were developed in Germany to help keep the rat population under control. Their temperament can be demanding at times. They are high-energy and are loyal to their masters.

This small dog will do well in an apartment or with a small yard. They can get enough exercise with indoor play. Males will be 10-12 inches and females will be 10-11 inches. The weight for the males will be 8-10 pounds and 8-9 pounds for the female. Their shorthaired coat should be brushed weekly.

Miniature Schnauzer

Bred in Germany and named after the German word schnauzer, which means muzzle, this dog is an affectionate, loving and energetic. They will demand time from their owner and get along well with children.

They will do fine in an apartment or with a small yard. Exercise should be daily and consist of a brisk walk and playtime. Daily brushing will help keep the coat from matting. They will shed little to no hair. Males will stand 12-14 inches and weigh 11-18 pounds. Females will stand 11-13 inches and weigh 10-15 pounds.
