Papillon

This little dog is sometimes referred to as the “butterfly dog” because their ears look like butterfly wings. They are gentle, affectionate and intelligent dogs. They love to cuddle and will become possessive of their owner and resentful of outsiders. They can be trained to perform small tricks but might be difficult to housebreak. The Papillon is good with children and other household animals. They wouldn’t do well in an apartment because they tend to bark at all noises. They can’t tell the difference between a casual noise and a noise worthy of a true bark. Exercise can be as simple as active indoor play or a long walk a couple times a week. The height for the males and females will be 8-11 inches. Males will weigh 8-10 pounds and females will weigh 7-9 pounds. Their long silky coat should be brushed daily.

Parson Russell Terrier

More commonly known as the Jack Russell Terrier, their name was changed in April 2003. This is a perky, loving and devoted dog. They have an incredible instinct to hunt so they shouldn’t be let off their leash unless they are trained very well. They will become destructive by digging and barking unless they are occupied and exercised sufficiently. The Parson Russell can jump very high, a backyard with a high fence is recommended. They are at their happiest in a large yard where they can run and play, but will do okay in an apartment or with a small yard. Regular brushing and occasional baths is all the grooming they will need. Males will stand 10-15 inches and weigh 15-18 pounds. Females will weigh 9-14 inches and weigh 14-17 pounds.

Pekingese

Thought by the Chinese to be the legendary Foo Dog that drove away spirits. Commoners in China had to bow to them and death was the punishment for stealing one. When an emperor died they would sacrifice his Pekingese so it could follow him into the afterlife and offer him protection. They are brave and courageous little dogs. Both sexes will stand 6-9 inches and weigh between 8-10 pounds. They are very loving to their masters and have been known to show jealousy. This dog is good with children, but because of their size the children need to be respectful and careful. They will do well in an apartment or with no yard. Active indoor play is plenty of exercise for them. Their long coat needs to be brushed daily.

Pembroke Welsh Corgi

This breed was developed in Pembrokeshire, Wales and was used mainly to herd cattle by nipping at their heels and by barking at them. The Corgi is a protective and devoted dog. They are highly intelligent and are good with children. They will try to herd people by nipping at their ankles, but they can be taught not to do this. This is a naturally active dog that will do fine in an apartment or without a yard. The height for the males will be 10-12 inches and they will weigh around 25-30 pounds. Females will stand 10-12 inches and weigh 24-28 pounds. Their coat is soft and medium in length. They will shed twice a year.

Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen

This dog needs people attention and will demand it if it is not given to him. They are friendly, intelligent and have a great desire to please. He loves to dig and can jump very high. Backyard fences should be high and secure. They are good with children and easy to train. Bored and lonely bassets will find ways to entertain themselves. When out for a walk they shouldn’t be let off their leash, their hunting instincts are very strong. Both sexes will stand 13-15 inches and weigh 31-40 pounds. They are very active indoors and would do fine in an apartment or with a small yard. They will shed little to no hair if weekly brushing is done.

Pharaoh Hound

This is one of the oldest domesticated dog breeds in the world; their origin can be dated back to around 4000BC. Thought to have been bred in Ancient Egypt and used as a dog to hunt and chase small game. The Pharaoh Hound is calm, loving, loyal and brave. Great with children but not other household pets, small animals might pose a problem. When out for walks do not let him off his leash, this dog can run very fast and will take off to chase or hunt small animals. Exercise should be daily, they love to run and will do so alongside of you as you ride a bike, while always using a leash. The males will be 23-25 inches and the females will be 21-24 inches. Both sexes will weigh around 45-55 pounds. This dog needs little to no grooming; an occasional brushing will be fine.

Named the Pointer because of the stance the dog will take once they have found game. They are loyal, full of energy and considered to be a true friend. They will be calm in your home but when outdoors they become a powerful hunter. They need lots of space to be truly happy; an apartment is not good for this dog. Even a very active family will find it hard to keep up with this dog. If this dog becomes bored they tend to become destructive. Grooming is very easy, brush the coat regularly and bathe when needed. Males will stand 22-24 inches and females will be 21-24 inches. Both will weigh around 44-66 pounds.

Polish Lowland Sheepdog

The Polish Lowland Sheepdog is also known as PON. PON stands for Polish Owczarek Nizinny. This sheepdog is used as a working or herding dog but will make a great companion. They will be gentle with children. An apartment is not recommended for this dog. They need lots of space to be happy. Their long coat is long and shaggy and will cover their eyes. Males will stand 18-20 inches and females will stand 17-19 inches.

Pomeranian

This little fluffy dog is very loyal to their master and family. They are good with children but can become snappish if they become nervous. They can be excessive barkers, but can be trained not to be. The Pomeranian will be 7-12 inches and weigh 3-7 pounds. Their size makes them great house pets for an apartment. Indoor play is good exercise but they also enjoy long walks. Their puffy coat should be brushed often.

Poodle

There are three types of poodle breeds, Toy, Miniature and Standard. The Toy is very trainable, happy and loves to be around people. They can be snappish if teased. The Toy will be up to 10 inches and weigh 6-9 pounds. They will do fine in an apartment or in the country. Indoor play is plenty of exercise for them. They should be bathed and groomed every six weeks. The Miniature Poodle is also very trainable. They are very smart, sensitive and cheerful. They can become upset if left out of family activities. The Miniature will be 11-15 inches and weigh 15-17 pounds. An apartment is okay for this dog but they do love to have an open area to run and play in. They need to be bathed and groomed every six weeks. The Standard Poodle is a good-natured dog. The Standard tends to be calmer then the smaller poodles. They are also easy to train. They love to be around people and dislike being left alone. This poodle will be 15 inches or more in height. Males will be 45-70 pounds and females will be 45-60 pounds. A small yard or apartment will be fine for this dog. Indoor play is fine for exercise, but they do prefer an open area to run in. Grooming for this poodle should also be every six weeks.

Portugese Water Dog

The Portuguese Water Dog is a loyal and loving dog. They get along well with children and other animals in the home. This dog loves to be the center of attention. This breed loves to swim and enjoy playing a game of retrieve. They will do fine in an apartment as long as they receive daily physical and mental exercise. Males will stand 20-22 inches and weigh 42-55 pounds. Females will stand 17-20 inches and weigh 35-49 pounds. Their coat needs to be brushed regularly. They shed little to no hair, which makes them a perfect dog for someone with allergies.

Pug

The Pug is a stocky dog. They are loving, loyal and affectionate. The Pug is wonderful with children. They require lots of attention from their owners and will become jealous if they are not given it. Because of their short muzzle they do snore and wheeze. This dog will do great in an apartment or without a yard. Do not over exercise the Pug, they can start to wheeze if you do. Males will be 12-14 inches and weigh 13-20 pounds. Females will be 10-12 inches and weigh 13-18 pounds.

Puli

This little dog will be very loyal to their family. They are great family dogs but won’t do well around small children that would tease or be rough with them. The Puli is very intelligent and easy to train. They will do well in any type of living environment. They love to play, especially with their master. Females will be 14 ½ inches and weigh 20-30 pounds. Males will be 16-17 ½ inches and weigh 25-35 pounds. At six months of age their undercoat will start to entwine with the outer coat forming a cord. The cords should be separated by hand regularly. The Puli does not shed, they are a good dog to have if you have allergies.
